WITHOUT SCREAM OF MOM
1. Go slowly. If you suddenly leave the house one day in black fishnets, a Cinema Strange t-shirt, loads of eyeliner, a tattered skirt and Demonia boots when yesterday you were dressing primp and conservative, your parents may well flip. 2. If you've tried hiding your goth leanings from your parents because you just know they won't understand, but suddenly find that you've been caught, explain your side of things rationally. 3. Try to disassociate your gothiness from any particular religious leanings as best you can, though this may be hard given the religious imagery often used in all things goth. 4. Don't hang out with "bad people" and expect your parents not to worry. 5. Buy a thin black (floor length, preferably) jacket. Wear a bright colored shirt so mom doesn't think a bad thought at all, but put the jacket on when you go out. 6. Eyeliner is okay to apply in front of you parents (if you're a girl), but if you want the "overboard" look, wait till you're outside. 7. Try to make your mom buy black clothes for you, but don't dress "all-black" too often. That's when your mom will flip out and she'll never buy any more clothes for you. 8. Don't dive straight into a Gothic lifestyle. Your parents might think you are going through a phase or have been put under too much pressure if you immediately start wearing black make-up and want to dye your hair black.

What is goth? For some it has become a lifestyle, for others it's just wearing certain clothes, and listening to certain music. Many people get into it because of the clothes and the music, and then they find the clubs and the people, and get into it more and more. After a while, for some, it becomes a whole lifestyle. It's black clothes, black eyeliner, pale faces, fishnet, velvet, lace and PVC, piercings and androgynity. It's a darker kind of music, it's vampire and fantasy, medieval architecture and history. A more dramatic expression.
